Measure your total roof area from the ground without climbing on the roof — using house dimensions, roof pitch, and a simple multiplier.
The fastest way to calculate roof area is to start with your building's footprint area and adjust for pitch. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one covering the same footprint.
Measure the outside dimensions of your house at ground level. You need the total length and width. For L-shaped or complex floor plans, break the shape into separate rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.
Roof overhangs (eaves) extend beyond the exterior walls. A typical residential overhang is 12 inches (1 foot) on each side. Add this to both length and width before calculating.
House is 40' × 30' with 12" overhangs on all sides:
Adjusted: (40 + 2) × (30 + 2) = 42' × 32' = 1,344 sq ft footprint
The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint area to actual sloped roof area. Look up your roof pitch in this table:
| Pitch | Multiplier | Area Increase |
|---|---|---|
| Flat | 1.000 | 0% |
| 2/12 | 1.014 | +1.4% |
| 3/12 | 1.031 | +3.1% |
| 4/12 | 1.054 | +5.4% |
| 5/12 | 1.083 | +8.3% |
| 6/12 | 1.118 | +11.8% |
| 8/12 | 1.202 | +20.2% |
| 10/12 | 1.302 | +30.2% |
| 12/12 | 1.414 | +41.4% |
Continuing our example with a 6/12 pitch:
1,344 × 1.118 = 1,503 sq ft actual roof area
Roofing materials are cut and trimmed during installation, creating unavoidable waste. Add a waste factor based on roof complexity:
Final calculation with 10% waste:
1,503 × 1.10 = 1,653 sq ft total to order
Roofing materials are sold in "squares" — each square covers 100 sq ft.
