How to Calculate Roof Square Footage

Measure your total roof area from the ground without climbing on the roof — using house dimensions, roof pitch, and a simple multiplier.

The Pitch Multiplier Method

The fastest way to calculate roof area is to start with your building's footprint area and adjust for pitch. A steeper roof has more surface area than a flat one covering the same footprint.

Roof Area = (Length + 2×Overhang) × (Width + 2×Overhang) × Pitch Multiplier × Waste Factor

Step 1: Measure the Building Footprint

Measure the outside dimensions of your house at ground level. You need the total length and width. For L-shaped or complex floor plans, break the shape into separate rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.

  • Measure from the outside of the exterior walls
  • Include any bump-outs, bay windows, or attached garage rooflines
  • For multi-section roofs, measure each section separately

Step 2: Add Overhangs

Roof overhangs (eaves) extend beyond the exterior walls. A typical residential overhang is 12 inches (1 foot) on each side. Add this to both length and width before calculating.

  • 12" overhang: Add 2 feet to each dimension (1 ft per side)
  • 18" overhang: Add 3 feet to each dimension
  • No overhang: Use wall dimensions as-is

Example

House is 40' × 30' with 12" overhangs on all sides:

Adjusted: (40 + 2) × (30 + 2) = 42' × 32' = 1,344 sq ft footprint

Step 3: Apply the Pitch Multiplier

The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint area to actual sloped roof area. Look up your roof pitch in this table:

PitchMultiplierArea Increase
Flat1.0000%
2/121.014+1.4%
3/121.031+3.1%
4/121.054+5.4%
5/121.083+8.3%
6/121.118+11.8%
8/121.202+20.2%
10/121.302+30.2%
12/121.414+41.4%

Continuing our example with a 6/12 pitch:
1,344 × 1.118 = 1,503 sq ft actual roof area

Step 4: Add Waste Factor

Roofing materials are cut and trimmed during installation, creating unavoidable waste. Add a waste factor based on roof complexity:

  • Simple gable roof: 5-10% waste
  • Cross-gable or hip: 10-15% waste
  • Complex with valleys/dormers: 15-20% waste

Final calculation with 10% waste:
1,503 × 1.10 = 1,653 sq ft total to order

Step 5: Convert to Roofing Squares

Roofing materials are sold in "squares" — each square covers 100 sq ft.

Roofing Squares = Total Area ÷ 100
1,653 ÷ 100 = 16.53 → Order 17 squares

Tips for Accurate Measurement

  • Don't forget to measure each roof section separately for complex homes
  • Dormers add area — measure each dormer face and add it to the total
  • Don't know your pitch? Use our Pitch Calculator to find it
  • When in doubt, round up — it's better to have extra material than run short
