Convert roof area into exact material quantities โ bundles, nails, underlayment, starter strips, and ridge caps.
Shingles are sold in bundles. Three bundles of standard 3-tab shingles cover one roofing square (100 sq ft). Architectural/dimensional shingles are heavier and may require 4 bundles per square for some brands.
Calculate your total roof area including waste factor. See our square footage guide for the method.
Example: 2,000 sq ft roof with 10% waste = 2,200 sq ft total
Standard felt (15# or 30#) or synthetic underlayment covers the entire roof deck. A roll of #15 felt covers about 400 sq ft; synthetic rolls cover 1,000 sq ft.
Starter shingles go along the eave (bottom) edge and rake (side) edges of the roof.
Ridge cap shingles cover the peak (ridge) and hip lines of your roof.
Each shingle requires 4 nails (6 in high-wind zones). A standard box of 1ยผ" roofing nails contains about 7,200 nails.
Metal drip edge installs along all eave and rake edges. Sold in 10-foot lengths.
Pieces = Total edge length รท 10 (round up, add 10% for overlap)
