How to Calculate Roof Square Footage
Calculating your roof's total area requires knowing the house footprint dimensions and the roof pitch. The basic formula is:
Roof Area = Footprint Area × Pitch Multiplier × Waste Factor
Step-by-Step Method
- Measure the footprint: Measure the length and width of your house from the outside walls (ground level).
- Add overhangs: Add the eave overhang distance to each side of the footprint.
- Apply pitch multiplier: The steeper the roof, the more surface area it has. A 4/12 pitch adds ~5%, while a 12/12 pitch adds ~41%.
- Apply waste factor: Add 10-15% for waste from cuts, overlaps, and starter strips.
Roof Shapes
- Gable: Two rectangular slopes meeting at a ridge. Area = footprint × pitch multiplier.
- Hip: All four sides slope. Typically ~10% more area than a gable with the same footprint.
- Flat: Area equals the footprint (plus overhangs). No pitch multiplier needed.
- Shed: Single sloped surface. Area = footprint × pitch multiplier.
