How to Measure Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of rise (vertical height) to run (horizontal distance). The standard measurement uses 12 inches of run as the base โ€” so a "6/12 pitch" means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance.

Pitch = Rise รท Run (per 12 inches)
Degrees = arctan(Rise รท Run) ร— (180 รท ฯ€)
Slope % = (Rise รท Run) ร— 100

Methods to Measure

  • From the attic: Place a level against a rafter, measure 12 inches horizontal, then measure the vertical distance at that point.
  • From the ground: Use a pitch gauge or measure the gable end with a tape measure and calculate the ratio.
  • Speed square: Place a speed square on a rafter edge to read the pitch directly from the degree scale.
