What Is a Gable Roof?

A gable roof is the most common roof shape in residential construction. It consists of two rectangular slope surfaces that meet at a central ridge, forming a triangular wall (the "gable") at each end of the building.

Gable Roof Area = 2 ร— (Building Length ร— Slope Length)
Slope Length = (Building Width รท 2) รท cos(pitch angle)
Ridge Height = (Building Width รท 2) ร— tan(pitch angle)

Advantages

  • Simple, cost-effective design โ€” lowest labor and material costs
  • Excellent water and snow drainage
  • Good attic ventilation and usable attic space
  • Easy to frame, maintain, and inspect

Considerations

  • Vulnerable to wind damage in hurricane zones (gable end can act as a sail)
  • Requires gable-end bracing in high-wind areas
  • Limited architectural variety compared to hip or mansard designs
