Apply IRC building codes to determine the exact intake and exhaust ventilation your attic needs โ in Net Free Area (NFA).
Proper attic ventilation prevents moisture damage, ice dams, premature shingle deterioration, and excessive cooling costs. An improperly ventilated attic can void your shingle warranty and cause mold growth in as little as 2-3 years.
IRC Section R806 specifies two ventilation ratios:
Measure the footprint of the attic space (same as your building's upper floor area). This is not the same as roof area โ it's the horizontal projection.
Example: 50' ร 30' attic = 1,500 sq ft
Using the 1/300 rule:
The key to effective ventilation is balance. At minimum, 50% of NFA should be intake (at soffits) and 50% exhaust (at ridge). A 60/40 split favoring intake is acceptable.
| Vent Type | NFA per Unit | For 360 sq in |
|---|---|---|
| Ridge vent (per linear foot) | 18 sq in/ft | 20 ft of ridge vent |
| Box/static vent (each) | 50 sq in | 8 box vents |
| Turbine vent (each) | 150 sq in | 3 turbine vents |
| Powered attic fan | ~200 sq in opening | 2 fans |
| Vent Type | NFA per Unit | For 360 sq in |
|---|---|---|
| Continuous soffit (per linear foot) | 9 sq in/ft | 40 ft of continuous soffit |
| Rectangular soffit vent (each) | 60 sq in | 6 vents |
| Round soffit vent (each) | 28 sq in | 13 vents |
